I've used this feature quite a bit and have had no problem whatsoever.

I've finally found one volunteer task and one lengthy transfer and aborted them without any problem.
Just the task required a confirmation.

I've never had any problem with Abort Tasks or Transfers.  The longer the list being aborted, the longer process takes.  But I consider that normal behavior, not a problem.
