Title: BT 1.01
Post by: Pepo on April 04, 2011, 08:30:13 PM
Nice the "Torrent 1.01" download option :) just that initially it was a pretty bit confusing for me. In the uTorrent I've seen some unknown magnet: link (I'm not used to them), no files listed to be downloaded, zero availability, no users, no seeds, 1 peer listed by some tracker... Possibly DHT found some 10 minutes later someone (in Arizona?) and BT was downloaded.

The BT itself seems fine.

That's me. ;D

When possible seed the other 1.00 as well.
The more seeds the better.

I was trying to connect a Mac OS machine. What's the difference between "Not connected" and "Not connected (R)"?

I could, on other machine, which is always-on, as soon as it will notice your seeding machine.

Up through v1.00 we used to be able to right click on a waiting transfer and select "retry all".  This ability is gone :(
Is there another way to do this, or can it be brought back?

Again, or still, the Tasks tab optionally displays incorrect "time since the last checkpoint" (for pure CPU tasks). Whether it is still related to the repeating bug with flipping Elapsed time while running/paused?

Quote from: Pepo on February 03, 2011, 06:27:45 PM
I'm sorry to say I can again see problems with Elapsed time (in BT 0.98). Excerpts from an AQUA ROQS task state:
Project AQUA@home
Application D-Wave's Redfield Open Quantum Simulation: Multi-Threaded 0.08 (mt1)
Workunit name 18jan11_c_p5_005_50_1_5
State Waiting to run
Resources 3.00 CPUs
CPU time at last checkpoint 98:15:39 (04d,02:15:39)
CPU time 98:15:40 (04d,02:15:40)
Elapsed time 07:25:55
Estimated time remaining 08:11:54
Fraction done 83.966 %

For a 3-thread task, 7:25 hours wall-clock time is a bit less IMO compared to 4 CPU days. Also BOINC Manager reports 40:35:54 as Elapsed time... (and 98:15:40 as CPU time). The task stays passive in memory, was last time restarted 8 days ago and consumed 64:05:21 CPU seconds since.
(Other 15 active tasks on the machine show their Elapsed times (ranging from few minutes to 28, 47, 65 hours on the 3 longest ones) in agreement with BOINC Manager.)

Now in BT 1.00 + BT 1.01, a PrimeGrid task. Task properties when paused: Project PrimeGrid
Application Cullen Prime Search (LLR) 6.09
State Waiting to run
CPU time at last checkpoint 02d,19:07:25
CPU time 02d,19:07:25
Elapsed time 02d,17:58:28
Estimated time remaining 01d,09:02:36
Fraction done 70.099 %

From main Tasks tab: its checkpoint time is incorrect while paused. When it is paused: Project Application Name Elapsed time Progress Checkpoint
PrimeGrid 6.09 Cullen Prime Search (LLR) llrCUL_83826417_0 02d,17:58:28 (02d,19:07:25) 70.099% [0] 02d,19:07:25
When it runs: PrimeGrid 6.09 Cullen Prime Search (LLR) llrCUL_83826417_0 02d,22:33:38 (02d,19:07:59) 70.099% [0] 00:00:33 When paused a few minutes later: PrimeGrid 6.09 Cullen Prime Search (LLR) llrCUL_83826417_0 02d,17:58:28 (02d,19:16:05) 70.179% [0] 02d,19:16:05

I'm trying to download and seed both files. On the tracker for one of them (which ??? - "magnet:?xt=urn:btih:F55944FEB33A13B5CCC12301DDE5F59187A3CC85") there are already 8 waiting peers, for the other file (which ??? - "magnet:?xt=urn:btih:874ED83D7B3B94BA72941D50919E79C8CED036EC") there are 0 peers waiting.

It's a bit confusing as there is no visible & human-readable file names...

Does NOT WORK here.  Went back to v1.00 and it works fine.  Installed v1.01 again and still no choices on the right click. Any chance of adding "Retry all transfers" under Projects/Report all completed tasks?  Until then I guess I'm stuck on v1.00 :(

Sure I understand, what you mean. Just that I can not imagine, what could be causing, that YOU do not get the right-click context menu on available transfers... If you get it on 1.00 and I suppose we do test the same 1.01 executable.

Maybe some typo error in the language file? Could yo try to switch BT's GUI to some other language? (OK, I've checked some 6 languages, they were fine here. Some other ideas?)

Using the default English language file.  I deleted all language files and reinstalled, no luck there either.  All other right click menus work fine so I assume something changed when the new menu choices were added.  I tried 1.01 on one of the cruncher only machines and the right click context menu did work but ONLY if I clicked on one of the items and THEN right clicked.  On all earlier versions an item did NOT have to be highlighted before the right context menu worked and for some reason ONLY that menu does not work at all on my main machine.  For now I reinstalled v1.01 and am using the old BoincView program tell transfers to retry.  Kind of a PITA but at least it works.

I believe this will be the culprit. During the whole BT's history I've not been able to understand, why

I'd not necessarily call this behavior "a pain", because I know it works if I do not forget to left-click-select my desired line in advance (if I do), but surely at least a "would-be-nice-to-repair" or "would-be-nice-to-let-it-behave-consistently" category.

Just to check the behavior, I've restarted BT 1.01, then tried on all tabs (initially nowhere was any line selected). On all tabs (but the History) right-clicking at any of the lines caused the selection to appear on the line and context menu being opened, second click anywhere else still opened a context menu belonging to the (previously) still selected line. On the History tab, no context menu appeared, I had to select some line first in order to let it appear.

I believe this will be the culprit. During the whole BT's history I've not been able to understand, why

  • sometimes the context menu can be immediately "applied" to any (not selected) line (which then immediately gets selected),
  • sometimes the context menu belonged to some other (already selected) line, not the particular (not selected) line I've just right- clicked at,
  • sometimes no context menu opens at all, possibly just because no line is selected.

I'd not necessarily call this behavior "a pain", because I know it works if I do not forget to left-click-select my desired line in advance (if I do), but surely at least a "would-be-nice-to-repair" or "would-be-nice-to-let-it-behave-consistently" category.
It is if the right click menu doesn't work at all under any circumstance and there's no other way to get the files uploaded except to load BoincView and do it there.  I bet Fred would have a quick solution but he's most likely hiking up a mountain trail.  I understand, the rivers have opened up here and it's paddling season again  :)

I'll do some testing on the retry all.
But do you know you can retry by double clicking on a line.
This will normally clear the project delay as well.

Yes but I have 11 machines and lots of projects.  My index finger gets tired ;D
How about adding "Retry all transfers" just above Projects / Report all completed tasks?
I'd been thinking about requesting that for a while now anyway.

I think this is better: I made this as an experiment for private use. ;D

Add to the config.xml file

<private>
<refresh> 3600 </refresh>
</private>

Restart BT, you should see the text: download refresh: xx Seconds in the logging.

This way the downloads are auto refreshed every hour. The refresh only happens when there are > 0 downloads.

I could add it the the context menu, but than you get no feedback.

Hmm, I tested it and when no lines are selected, the line at the current cursor position is selected.
But the cursor has to be above a valid line.

On my computer the line is automatically selected.
And Retry all seems to work... I didn't change a thing...

There may be a slight delay because of the added WWW lines, because BT has to wait for the WWW data.

Does WWW update have to be activated to get the right click to work?

Also do these lines have to be in any particular place in the config.xml:

I'm not seeing "download refresh: xx Seconds in the logging" in the log file.

For the context menu to show the WWW link request must be completed.
You can try a transfer from the localhost, that should be quick.

I'm not seeing "download refresh: xx Seconds in the logging" in the log file.

I put it at the end.

I've notice something what forced me thinking of... BT on machine A sees tasks ready to report on machines A and B. They appear in both History and tray icon's context menu. Some time later B goes offline (I mean, invisible to BT on A), but the entries in both History and tray icon's context menu stay. Now even if all A's tasks are reported, the tray icon's context menu will show e.g. "Report all finished tasks 37" ad infinitum (more exactly, until BT will be restarted?).

I believe that if a remote client goes offline, the number of its finished tasks should not count against the mentioned number until the machine goes again online.

Mystery of the "right click, no menu" behavior in "Transfers" tab partially solved.  For some reason starting with v1.01 if the "Computer" field in "Transfers" is moved to anywhere other than the end position then the menu will not pop up when right clicked.  Have confirmed this behavior on 2 machines.  Now the rest of the mystery is: what changed?

Multiple  BT icons in windows status line.  When I click on one they all disappear except the one I clicked on.  Not a major problem just strange and confusing as to which one is the real one.  This usually happens when the computer has been unattended for several hours.

I am running on XP3.

This happened under 0.73 along time ago and has not appeared on any later versions that I know of.

The status line shows that BoincTasks is "Closing x"  Where x is a number that increases by 1.  When  it gets done closing ithe display is reset and only  the local hosts tasks are displayed. eventually the rest of the computers monitored are added to the display and then it starts all over again.

I am unable to display the dump files  on my machine.

My bet is these are remnants of crashed BTs. (Maybe you could check around, whether BT really crashed several times during the unattended period?) If you hover mouse cursor over any of them, it should simply disappear. This happens very often (or always?) with crashed apps, which display a tray icon.

I've checked your idea on my computer. I'm trying to move the Computer column around the whole History (initially it was placed as the rightmost (==last?) column), but neither a selected task line nor its context menu do appear.

On the History tab, no context menu appeared, I had to select some line first in order to let it appear.
The history is fixed in V 1.02.
Let's indeed wait on BT 1.02.

You're confirming the above behavior?  To restate: here on both machines with v1.01 if the Computer column is moved to anywhere but the last position in Transfers, then the right click context menu does not work.

Multiple  BT icons in windows status line.  When I click on one they all disappear except the one I clicked on.  Not a major problem just strange and confusing as to which one is the real one.  This usually happens when the computer has been unattended for several hours.
My bet is these are remnants of crashed BTs. (Maybe you could check around, whether BT really crashed several times during the unattended period?) If you hover mouse cursor over any of them, it should simply disappear. This happens very often (or always?) with crashed apps, which display a tray icon.
For the check - you can surely find out, whether your currently running BT's process was started BEFORE  the unattended period (i.e. by you), or DURING it (i.e. automatically restarted after some crash).

Not really, my observations are now slightly different (even different to my observations a few days ago) (but the reason (some particular code's behavior) might be the same):

On Computers tab, right-clicking any line selects it (and opens its context menu).
In Projects tab, right-clicking any line does not move selection away from climateprediction.net and each time opens its context menu.
In both Tasks and History tabs, no line is selected and right-clicking any line does not select any line (and thus does not open any context menu). Independently on the Computers column position. After explicitly left-clicking any task, it stays selected after right-clicking any other line. And History is occasionally jumping down upon any clicking.

Hi Peter, you're answering about all tabs except the one I'm referring to.  I'm asking about the Transfers tab and it's right click behavior when the Computer column is NOT in the last position.  Wondering if the behavior is the same as on both my BT machines?

Sorry :-[ I was too fixed on History. Confirming:

In Transfers tab, I've currently one file. even if the line is not selected, right-clicking it does select it. But if the Computer column is not the right-most, the context menu does not open.

Closing X isn't necessarily a crash.
It indicates a connection thread that's no longer responding.
What happens, BT closes all connections and tries to connect again.

BT 1.02 has a user definable timeout. So for slow connections you may increase the timeout time.

I am running on XP3.

This happened under 0.73 along time ago and has not appeared on any later versions that I know of.
This is caused by a crash, that leave one icon behind.
There should be a crash report somewhere.
You can also remove the check at "Silently restart on a crash". Maybe this will give some more info, why there is a crash.

Thanks Peter, wanted to make sure it was acting the same on machines other than mine.  Guess it's a confirmed bug.  Now where's that bug swatter...

Thanks for the linguistic hint! Finally I know what to effectively hunt the (SW) bugs (and flies) with ;D
