Questions / TThrottle for MacOS?
October 08, 2018, 09:21:26 PM
Would it be possible to create a Mac version of TThrottle, or is there similar software available? I recently purchased one of the newer MacBook Pro 13" models which is very thin, and I would like to compute at the highest level possible without melting or burning anything up. I have been a user of TThrottle on PC desktops and laptops for a number of years now to manage heat and fan noise without compromising on the computation being done. My previous MacBook Pro (Mid-2010, 13") had a much more robust cooling system, and it could handle a full load without getting into dangerous CPU temperatures, or even running the CPU fan at maximum. However, these new thin models are not capable of sustaining high CPU loads for indefinite periods of time.

Questions / Re: Working Temperature of I7-4771

My guess would be that the heat exchanger was not tight enough on the CPU die, or there were air bubbles or other impurities in the cooling pad/thermal compound that prevented good heat transfer. Both systems (cooling pads and thermal compound) are pretty much single-use, once you break the bond you should remove and re-apply to ensure good coverage and transfer.

Depending on where that temperature is measured, that seems much too hot for your CPU as Intel reports that it's max temperature should be 72 degrees C at the heat spreader: http://ark.intel.com/products/77656/Intel-Core-i7-4771-Processor-8M-Cache-up-to-3_90-GHz

Although I have a lowly i5 4590, its Tcase is also 72 degrees C, its temperatures are typically around 50-55 C with a Corsair H50 closed loop liquid cooler running BOINC at 100%. I would say something is not right, check your installation and make sure your pump/fan connections are good. Check the BIOS/EFI to see that they are spinning if they are plugged into one of the motherboard-controlled fan sockets.

I found the problem; I created the remote_hosts.cfg on my Mac using TextEdit, which amended a .txt (filename was remote_hosts.cfg.txt) but for some reason Finder wasn't showing the second extension. I was going to open and check the file with my Windows machine and noticed this. Now, I have the appropriate lines in the Event Log:

QuoteWed Nov 26 22:01:35 2014 |  | Config: GUI RPCs allowed from:
Wed Nov 26 22:01:35 2014 |  | Corsair
Wed Nov 26 22:01:35 2014 |  | 192.168.15.39

And everything shows up in BoincTasks! Now, I'll have to see if it works on my old PowerPC Macs...

My public IP is in the 75.164 range, so it's not me... Not a virtual machine, honest-to-goodness OS X 10.8.5 on a MacBook Pro.

gui_rpc_auth.cfg has a 32 character password, that is entered into Boinctasks for the host in question. Ultimately, I have at least three Macs that I would like to monitor.

remote_hosts.cfg has the following:
QuoteCorsair
192.168.15.39

And the startup lines from the BOINC manager, I don't see anything about allowed IPs.

I do have the following in BOINC manager:

Sat Nov 22 16:47:52 2014 |  | GUI RPC request from non-allowed address 16.2.229.183
Sat Nov 22 16:47:52 2014 |  | 13 connections rejected in last 10 minutes

There are multiple such messages for IPs in the 16.2.2xx.xxx address range, is that something I should be concerned about?

The PC running Boinctasks has a private range address of 192.168.15.39, which is set in the remote_hosts.cfg of BOINC. I also put the host name in said config file.

Linux and Mac / Connecting Boinctasks (Windows) to Macs
November 15, 2014, 06:49:14 PM
Is there a way to connect Boinctasks to a BOINC manager/client on a Mac, so that its tasks will show up in Windows? I tried adding the windows host in "remote_hosts.cfg" and using the password in "gui_rpc_auth.cfg" but when searching for the computer in Boinctasks, I get "Yes,Not connected (R)" in the status column. I realize that I could possibly run Boinctasks properly on my Mac using Wine, but I don't really need the full software on the Mac, just to view its tasks on a Windows computer.

Questions / Re: Odd Behavior/Crashing with TThrottle
October 18, 2009, 12:41:49 AM
I ran with "Auto Active" unchecked per your suggestion, and the crash happened again but with a little higher functionality in the user interface, at least for a while. I was able to open the BOINC Manager and read the Messages tab, which indicated "DLL initialization errors" for the various WUs that errored out. I couldn't seem to get the Tthrottle window open, and Firefox would just crash if I tried to open it... I did get some error windows saying that Windows Explorer had crashed. Apparently, something doesn't like Tthrottle.

Questions / Odd Behavior/Crashing with TThrottle
October 16, 2009, 04:07:40 AM
I noticed some interesting behavior after I installed TThrottle... Two identical crashes, both occurring when I was away from the computer. The symptoms of the crash included non responsiveness of the computer, including a replicated task bar at the top of the screen, and alternating black/white screen sometimes with an error message in an odd (non-system) font. Ctrl-Alt-Del doesn't work, but everything seems ok after doing a hard restart of the computer. Whatever the error/crash might be, it causes BOINC WUs to error out immediately as I have exceeded my WU limit for this host on various projects.

After removing Tthrottle from the startup, the host has run for about 20 hours without replicating the error. Until installing Tthrottle, I have not experienced any crashes or erroring WUs. Any pointers on what to look for would be much appreciated. If you would like info from the errored WUs, I can provide that if necessary.

Wish List / Older CPU Support?
July 14, 2009, 02:32:31 AM
I notice you're supporting a lot of newer CPUs, but unfortunately the client I'm looking to manage is a Pentium 4. Is there any chance that P4s or other CPUs will be supported?
