Cloud / Cannot add "computer" column to cloud
June 08, 2020, 11:38:17 AM
I have Boinctasks successfully transmitting to the cloud, but the computer column doesn't show up.  That would be useful as I have 6 machines.

Wish List / Allow shutdown of remote clients
May 28, 2020, 05:56:16 PM
Boinc Manager can shutdown the remote client it's connected to.  It would be nice if Boinctasks could also do this, at the moment it will only shut down the local one.

I don't get that far, I can see nowhere to create an account.  Tried Opera and Edge browsers.  I can only see a place to login.

Assume I'm 5 years old and explain what to click :-)
At the bottom of the page https://cloud.seti.nl
You should see Create new account Resend and Forgot.

Just tested with Opera.

Ok, my mistake.  I didn't spot it down there.

Yes, I asked them to change it and they told me to get lost.  I thought perhaps Boinctasks could translate the number into a percentage.
It should be solved at the source, the client know everything about the machine.

Well apparently the Boinc programmers think percentages are a better idea.  In case for some reason I change the CPU?!  I'd want to change the number of cores used then anyway and not keep a fixed percentage.

In extra, boinc preference, processor, "on multiprocessor systems, use at most", the number of CPUs would be easier than the percentage.  I have two machines with 24 cores each.  Converting to a percentage is a nuisance and requires me to get my calculator out!

Be aware that if this has to be converted to a percentage to give to boinc, then it should increase it slightly.  Eg if I have 3 cores and enter 66.6%, it will use only 1 core.  If I enter 66.7% it will use 2 cores.  Boinc rounds down, not up.

Cloud / Can't set up cloud account?
May 10, 2020, 12:29:50 PM
Is the cloud still functional?  I tried to set up an account, but I can only see an option to log in.  It says I don't have an account and please create one, but there is no link to do so!

I have Windows 10 set to display quite a long date format, so Boinctasks is showing "Wed, 20/5/2020 11:15:09 AM" in the deadline column which makes it rather wide.  I tried changing the setting in extra, boinctasks settings, view, but the user defined option doesn't work.  It just shows exactly what I type, eg "d, HH:MM:SS" and doesn't interpret it as a date and time.

Questions / Re: Two instances of Boinctasks at once?
April 19, 2020, 11:50:37 PM
Yeah, in hindsight, flipping through the computers one by one on the sidebar is a better way to check things are all running right.  So I wouldn't bother wasting time making what I requested, I've stopped doing it that way.

One has to wonder why the Boinc manager looks so awful.  I couldn't imagine using just that, even with a single computer.  Maybe you should ask if Boinc can incorporate your coding into theirs to make it all in one?

Sounds a bit complicated, more complicated than just using one of my other computers and remote displaying it.  That way they won't fight over files and registry entries.  I guess it would be a fair bit of hassle to let the program display things twice or let it run two of itself.  I'll stick to what I'm doing.

Questions / Two instances of Boinctasks at once?
April 17, 2020, 04:43:53 PM
This may be a weird and unusual request, but I like to monitor my Boinc machines in two different ways at once:
1) Divided by computer so I can quickly see if one is crashed, offline, stuck tasks etc.
2) Divided by project so I can get a quick overview of how many tasks are running for each project across all computers.

At the moment I'm doing this by having Boinctasks running on two computers, then remote access one of them so they're both displayed on local monitors (all the other machines are in a different room for quietness).

Would it be possible to run two instances of Boinctasks on one machine to save me having to do the remote access stuff?

Questions / Re: Boinctasks stuck on "updating"

If the computers don't have a fixed IP set than you should use the MAC address and remove the IP address.
You should set up the remote computer in BOINC to allow a connections from any IP address.
In BoincTasks Setting, make sure the Expert tab shows Reconnect every xx seconds e.g. 120 and the Connection timeout e.g 120.

I've fixed it.  A faulty ethernet cable was causing some packets to be lost - I only spotted it by running a continuous ping between computers and swapping different cables in.  I didn't suspect a wiring problem before, since I can easily transfer terabytes of data using windows file sharing.  I assume this must be more robust than whatever method you're using.  Perhaps you should program Boinctasks to cater for the odd lost packet?

It's as good as fixed, they haven't changed IP since I bought them.  It's technically DHCP and COULD change, but doesn't.

If I run Efmer Boinc Toolbox on the remote computer, it has a tick against "allow remote (RPC) access for all computers" (and all the other 3 ticks) - is that good enough?  I don't have the toolbox running all the time, only when I need to create or fix a connection.  Should it run all the time?

My expert tab says reconnect every 30 seconds and timeout in 120.  Are there better numbers to use than those?

Boinctasks seems to have a very flimsy connection, often requiring the toolbox to persuade communication to work.  Can't this be reprogrammed to function better?
BoincTasks relies on the BOINC client to communicate.
But what you are telling, something isn't right.
Do you use a fixed IP address, or a dynamic.
Doesn't the offending BOINC computer show anything in it's message log. It might be refusing the connection.

The problem seems to occur when one computer is a bit bogged down with something, either the one running Boinctasks (it did it last night when I was backing up the whole system to a slow hard disk with cloning software), or one of the ones it's monitoring.  Perhaps if it can't get a response in a certain timeframe due to the CPU being overloaded then it gets upset?  This usually results in a couple of the computers disappearing from the task list, or sometimes the whole thing stops responding.  Even right clicking on the tray icon for Boinctasks and clicking exit does nothing.

The IPs are handed out by the ISP router automatically by DHCP, but they always remain the same.  As far as I can remember, I gave Boinctasks the IP of each machine, so I don't think that's the problem.  Ipconfig on a machine shows they only have a 3 day lease, but they won't lose the IP even if switched off for longer, as the router cycles through new IPs first if more machines are connected.

Do you want me to turn on any specific debug logging?  I had a quick glance at the stdoutdae.txt on the computer that usually causes the problems because it's slowest, but I can't spot anything.  The stdoutdae.txt on this computer (the one running boinctasks) has no entries for the past few months!  I've deleted the file to see if it will start again.
