Wish List / cc_config.xml editor
April 27, 2011, 11:44:27 AM
As of [23470] + [23471], BOINC starts to "Implement get_cc_config, set_cc_config RPCs".

May we expect to get some "BOINC configuration" dialog box afterwards?

Wish List / Abort dialog - what to abort?
April 15, 2011, 09:16:30 PM
I've recently aborted some tasks a couple of tasks and noticed, that the dialog contains Project name and a cryptical Task name (which is necessary when aborting just some of multiple similar tasks), but is missing the Application name - which I personally perceive as the most important identifier of what is running (and should be killed).

Could the App name column be added?

on the bug list: Bug: Don't show negative time left and deadline.
No nooooo please hold on! Both are good indications of either buggy application or a time past deadline.
Ok I change this into ??, indicating an error in the number.
The values are way out of range and the actual numbers mean nothing.
With negative Time left you're probably right - meaningless value calculated out of meaningless values? "??" could be a good replacement.
But the red negative Deadline value is still correct, whether in "date+time" or relative "dd,hh:mm" format, isn't it?

The Remaining time estimate is still displayed as "-" instead of "??". In the task's Properties, the Estimate is being a copy of Elapsed time!!

Deadline time is still correctly displayed in date+time mode, correctly warn-lighted in both modes, but blank (instead of either "??" or "-ddd,hh:mm:ss" :'() in the second mode.

Because I still can't remember the difference between History's normal mode and Smart mode :-[  (and the BT's Manual page does also not explain it) I'll leave it unmentioned.

We know that if BT's History fetching notices a task's progress is approaching (or exceeded) 100%, it is fetching the task's state far more often, in order not to miss the moment the task is finished. At this moment the task is forgot and often upon the next history refresh it is already uploaded and reported (often in some 3-7 seconds) -> "Reported: OK *".

I'd like to ask for an extension of this behavior, while any task is seen to be actively uploaded. Such state usually takes just a few seconds per task (except some multi-MB beasties - BTW is there any known estimate when an upload or download will finish?). I believe that this way the number of missed reports would be far lower. Sure there is no need for faster History fetching if networking is currently disabled or all uploads are postponed due to any connection problems.

[Edit]As a task is noticed to be finished, its result files are expected to be immediately uploaded... thus the History fetching could immediately start with checking the uploads.

Beta Testing / BT 1.01
April 04, 2011, 08:30:13 PM
Nice the "Torrent 1.01" download option :) just that initially it was a pretty bit confusing for me. In the uTorrent I've seen some unknown magnet: link (I'm not used to them), no files listed to be downloaded, zero availability, no users, no seeds, 1 peer listed by some tracker... Possibly DHT found some 10 minutes later someone (in Arizona?) and BT was downloaded.

The BT itself seems fine.

Wish List / Properties window
April 01, 2011, 01:14:57 PM
BT shares one Properties dialog to show both

  • Computer properties (usually very wide, with thin left column and wiiiiide right column),
  • Project properties (usually very tall, with wide left column and thin right column),
  • Task properties (medium-sized, with wide left column and medium-to-wide right column).
The four settings for dialog width and height and widths of the columns are shared between these three modes.

In order to immediately see the most, I have to keep the left column wide (to see by-the-additional-width-less from the Computer properties) and to keep the whole dialog unnecessarily wide (just because of the occasional Computer properties, which I have to scroll anyway, because there is also no tooltip). And in order to keep the dialog window not-that-much-tall for the mostly displayed tasks' properties, I always have to scroll it vertically to see the Project properties.

Could the dialog keep these four settings separate for the three modes?

Questions / DNETC's Progress%
March 23, 2011, 06:00:03 PM
My DNETC task dnetc_gpu_NV_normal_832414_0 is now, after 18:36:11 elapsed and 15:48:03 CPU time (although it claims 0.05C+1NV ;D), at 136.409% progress (according to BT 1.00's Tasks tab, although both its Task Properties dialog and BOINC Manager and client_state.xml tell 0.000%).

Also the Remaining time is being estimated (in the Task Properties dialog) to -04:56:47, although Tasks tab and BOINC Manager show "---" estimate.

How are these values calculated? Could/should the negative ETA estimate be also displayed on the Tasks tab (with highlighted background?)?

When trying to add corresponding rules, a rule for {Remaining time < 0:00:01} is catching the negative time and highlights the task, but a rule for {Progress % > 99.99} does not match it. Should it? Should a rule {Progress % > 100.00} be allowed? (Value 100.00 is invalid). Should a rule {Remaining time < 0:00:00} be allowed? (Values HHH:MM:SS are also not allowed (just d,HH:MM:SS), although they can be preferably selected in the View tab.)

I've some 22 projects, their single graphs cover various periods between 10.1.2011 and 11.3.2011 and show spikes for received tasks.

With exception of 5 projects (AQUA, ibercivis, Spingenge, WCG, WUProp - if it matters), which cover a period 9.1.2011-11.3.2011, and Pirates, which covers 9.1.-10.1.2011. These 6 projects show no task spikes, although ... the graphs are apparently prepared to display some correctly sized spikes, but nothing gets displayed?

Even more, with  "Combine projects" checked, I can combine any combination of the "correct" project's task spikes, but adding any of the "wrong" projects renders the graph blank.
Now a bit different observation: Today, (nearly) all project display spikes for their tasks, with exception of CPDN (graph displays 11.2.-12.2. level 1, the task was really received on 11.2. 14:51 and still runs) and GPUGrid (graph displays 13.2.-14.2. level 1, the task was finished 3 days later), but combining them with other projects does not hurt the displayed spikes. The projects' graphs usually cover some periods between 14.1.2011 and 15.3.2011.

The exceptions to the timescale are DNETC, PrimeGrid, WUProp, which graphs cover the period of 13.1.2011-15.3.2011. But this time their graphs contain task spikes. But they are not "combinable"" with other projects.

Resume:

  • The project (by name or data) apparently does not matter, today it is this one, tomorrow another one (WUProp is still the only exception).
  • If the spikes are not displayed in a single graph, this is possibly some other/additional bug.
  • Each time a project does not "play well" while combining it with other projects, its timescale seems to cover period of <-1 , +0> days compared to the majority of other projects' graphs. Could this one additional day at the beginning be the clue?

Wish List / Complete info about installed apps
March 10, 2011, 03:53:26 PM
A very low-level cosmetic wish (although maybe rather simple to fulfill?):

In Windows' list of installed programs, BoincTasks and TThrottle state, among other, the following info:

Quote from: Windows' Control Panel

Name
Issuer
Date installed

Boinc Tasks 32 and 64 bit by eFMer V 0.99    eFMer 07.02.2011
TThrottle (32/64 Bit): temperature Throttle by eFMer V3.3.0    07.03.2011

Could it be slightly modified, for the sake of completeness?

Wish List / File transfer (where to?) status message
March 02, 2011, 07:31:40 PM
File transfers' status message becomes different types, depending on its state:
"Downloading/Uploading"
"Download/Upload pending, retried: 6"
"Retry in: 00:40:53, retried: 3"

In the third state (which displays <StatusRetry>), which is often available for hours long, it is not clear at all, whether the files are being uploaded or downloaded.

I'd like to propose to replace <StatusRetry> with two strings:
<StatusDownloadRetry>      Retry download in:
<StatusUploadRetry>        Retry upload in:

(Off course, if the download/upload information is at all available in RPCs, if not, I'd ask BOINC devs for its addition into the protocol.)

I've seen the idea at BOINC dev (a bit confused reasoning down there, but never mind, the main idea stays valid IMO) and had to steal it immediately ;D

OK, what about to randomize the moments, when the running BOINC tasks' processes are paused, instead of pausing them all at one moment? (I understand that it would possibly not have such noticeable effect as it would have on a machine using BOINC's native throttling, as the period in TTh is much shorter than in BOINC, but... the power supply could notice it?)

Beta Testing / BT 0.99
February 07, 2011, 08:07:03 PM
BT now seems to correctly display the originating project name in Notices. But "Notices from BOINC" (as (loosely translated) are they displayed in BOINC Manager) are headed just by a bold colon:
Quote:
Nerozpoznaná značka v cc_config.xml: <force_auth_off>
26.01.11 17:40 viac...
and it looks a bit weird  :-\

Questions / Notices
February 07, 2011, 04:52:32 PM
Would it make sense if BT would add own notice about an existing newer version into BOINC's Notices? After automatic check once a day/week/user preference.

Similarly, if user is connecting his BT to TTh, then an existence of new TTh could be checked and loged too...

Wish List / Show projects' "Venue" value
February 04, 2011, 12:38:15 PM
It would be nice to see the projects' venues in the Projects tab. As they are actually defined separately per-project for each different host.

If the argument against would be the increasing number of columns (although they can be separately hidden), then at least in the "Project properties" window. (But at best both of them.)

I believe that in the (near?far?) future the venues are planned to be reworked. No idea for the time frame. I'd bet rather for years.

Wish List / Filter messages
January 26, 2011, 06:17:47 PM
Could please the Messages filtering (by project name) list the projects in menu alphabetically? It is sometimes pain to find a particular one..........
Could also a "No projects" option be available in the filter, in addition to existing (default) "All projects"? Sometimes looking for occasional general message as simple as finding a needle in a haystack.
Could "Include general messages" be available also when displaying all projects? Sometimes there can be too much general messages...

Wish List / Task waiting on GPU memory
January 26, 2011, 06:09:25 PM
My Einstein task was sitting idle and refusing to start. Each time after restarting the client, it launched for a second and terminated with error ("[task] task called temporary_exit(300.000000)").

Later in the BOINC Manager I've noticed its state "Waiting to run (Waiting on GPU memory)". Also in the task properties dialog.

BT is displaying just the innocent "Waiting to run" part. Could it be possible to display also the second part, also both in the Tasks and task's properties?

Beta Testing / BT 0.97
January 14, 2011, 04:34:14 PM
The Tasks and Stats graphs use the predefined 20 colors. If there is a larger number of projects, then all over the 20th share the last color.

Could please the colors be used again from beginning, starting with the 21st and 41st project etc.?

Wish List / Notices tab's context menu

-Changed: Notices tab, should I remove the context menu????????
I'd say, if noone is repeatedly accidentally damaging anything using it, then it is just an added functionality.
(I've already successfully used its Refresh, copied a displayed link a couple of times and also obtained an address of SETI's Flattr button image.)

Wish List / Core client version in the History
January 01, 2011, 09:03:46 PM
Sometimes having the BOINC client's version column in the History tab would be advantageous, when considering, which app errors are common to which client's version...

(A low priority.)

Wish List / Deadline to be kept in history?
December 22, 2010, 04:13:06 PM
I've got an idea for a poll, whether it would be useful to keep also a task's deadline in history...
