I have been fighting a freeze up problem on 2 different PCs one of which I rebuilt to try to solve the problem.
I see a frozen screen with no option except hardware reset button.
This happens at various times and I first thought It was caused by SpeedFan because it would happen sometimes during SpeedFan start-up. I stopped running SpeedFan and it didn't happen as often but it still occurred.
I rebuilt this PC and started adding programs back one at a time.
When I started Tthrottle it started occurring. I stopped using Tthrottle for a few days and it stopped.
I went through this process about 4 times with and without SpeedFan and the problem always/only occurs with Tthrottle.
I am going to send a log via the Email function of Tthrottle. I wish I could add more information but there doesn't seem to be any tracks in the system logs.
I also ran Tthrottle with Gflags.exe with heap tail checking , heap free checking , heap parameter checking and heap validation on call set. Freeze occured without trap going off.

I have not seen anyone else reporting this problem and I do NOT know what else I can do to solve this.
Bye the way ... the log "Debug" box is checked but the only thing showing up in the log file C:\Users\dan\AppData\Roaming\eFMer\TThrottle\log) is " Start logging"

It may not be a crash, but throttling the wrong kind of program.
Do you use the general throttle?
My guess it's throttling a system program that's causing things to freeze.

benDan

<<Do you use the general throttle?>> no, one time I had CPUID and Process Lasso both open when It froze.
BOINK was not running.
TThrottle was not showing any CPU use (< 1%).
Core was cool - about 33 C.
No throtteling at all ... TThrottle running CPU and GPU at 100%.
The elapesed times are anywhere from 1 to more than 24 hours.

Why are there no entrys in the log?

Check: C:\Program Files\eFMer\TThrottle for a file called tthrottle.xml
If you don't have any copy it here from the examples folder.
Look for :

<logging>
  <file>1</file>
</logging>

And make sure the value is set to 1.
You may not be able to safe the file in that location. Safe it in a temp folder and copy the file to the right place.
Restart TThrottle.

The log files will be here: C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\eFMer\TThrottle\log

Maybe the last act will give us a clue.

But.... when you press Control Alt Delete, is there no response at all?
Do you get any message or only the freeze.
There is so much that can cause a freeze.....

Beyond

Most of the times when I've worked on boxes that were simply freezing it turned out to be bad memory, memory OCed too far or memory not properly set up in the BIOS.  Processor errors usually cause a reboot.  GPUs can cause a freeze but often there's signs of video resets or video corruption.  Most of the time it has not been a software problem even though certain programs may precipitate the freeze by accessing the bad area of memory, more memory or by using memory more intensely.

benDan

I ran without Tthrottle for 3 days and it froze again so it is NOT a Tthrottle problem.

This has happened on 2 different PCs with 2 different sets of memory.
Memory BIOS settings are auto.
No overclocking
Win7 Memory test shows no problems.

I am going to turn off all programs and let it set for a few days and then start turning programs on a few at a time.

Sorry that I blamed Tthrottle but it really looked like that was the problem ... my bad! :'(

Memory BIOS settings are auto.
Auto OFTEN doesn't set things correctly.  DL CPU-Z and see what the ram SPD settings are compared to "Memory Speed".  Also, if you're running DDR2 memory, most MBs don't like any setting above PC2-6400 (400MHz) no matter what the SPD says.  Try manual settings.  I really doubt you're having a software issue.

benDan

CPUz values for memory same as SPD.
I went in and changed settings from auto to the values shown on the Corsair site for the memory (same as obtained via auto).
The frequency ranges from 200 Mhz to 376 Mhz (AMD Cool 'n' Quiet is enabled)

I will run with these settings and a minimal selection of software for a few days and if no freezing I will start adding back programs a few at a time.

This will take some time but I know no other way to figure this out.

Thanks for your help.  :)

If you still have problems try disabling AMD Cool 'n' Quiet in the BIOS.  Make sure ACC is disabled.  Set DIMM voltage to .1 volt higher than the SPD value in GPU-Z.  If you have one of the older Phenoms (like the 9500 or 9600) turn off virtualization.

benDan

I ran 5 days with no problems.
This morning at 7:15 I started Tthrottle.
The system Froze at 11:59.
Some log info is included.

well, I didn't run Tthrottle from 03/07/2011 until today.
Today I downloaded the latest beta (3.4.0) and it ran from 24 March 2011 - 14:19:07 until 24 March 2011 - 16:31:06 (determined by the logfile 24-03-2011.log)and then It froze again.

debug_logging = 1 but no debug info just entries as follows:

A freeze without any system screen or system error log, should never be a TThrottle problem.
It's the OS that crashes.
