The error is a bit cryptic to me:

Could this be BT-related?

Edit: I've also posted this on boincstats.com to see if it is BAM-related...

Looks like a connection problem. Busy server?
Keep me posted.

Nah, Willy said it's something with the rpc on the host. Still debugging...

In order discard BT error try to join to the Account Manager through BOINC Manager instead and if it's successful will be when could be a BT problem instead a web error of the Account Manager.

BOINC Manager > Tools > Start (or attach) Using an Account Manager
(or something similar as I have the BOINC Manager localized as Spanish)

 ;)

Tried it with BM, same result, but thanx for the suggestion.
Found another thread at SIMAP, claiming it could be the F-Secure Firewall. Will try to replace F-secure with Avira, to see if that's making a difference....

could be firewall related or AV integrated with AV, try doing it with AV and/or firewall deactivated only while the update is done and check result one way of discarding elements to know the root of the problem if possible.

as we said in Spain "Suerte, vista y al toro por los cuernos" (be lucky, good sight and pick the bull by the horns)  ;)

Definitely a problem with firewall. Uninstalling F-secure (and disabling Windows Firewall) did the trick. BAM! makes the connection and all the ready tasks from the projects are reported.
Case closed!
Reminder to myself: do install a proper firewall ;D
